Focused Recruitment Approach Helped Carbon Responsible Secure Key Leadership Hires in Just 8 Weeks

The Challenge

Carbon Responsible (CR) are experts in carbon management. With over a decade of experience helping clients chart a path towards net-zero, they are on a growth journey to deliver impact to many more organisations.

Building on the existing team, a key part of the plan was to establish a leadership group able to guide CR through a phase of rapid scaling.

A newly created Head of Carbon role leading the existing delivery team was defined and IAC were the chosen search partners.

The Recruitment Approach

After initial consultations with the CEO and COO, we were able to take a number of actions to help both the search and Carbon Responsible more broadly.

  3. Time spent onsite at CR meeting and working with the wider team
  4. Fully branded marketing campaign
  5. Full market search
  6. Constant communication and feedback to quickly focus on the best and right options

To deliver candidates with strong technical backgrounds and exceptional client facing skills along with corporate gravitas and commerciality we targeted our extensive network in the consulting space to find the best candidates.

Candidates on the shortlist included those from BGC, McKinsey, PwC, ERM, Carbon Trust as well as competitor climate platforms.

The Outcome

The successful candidate, James Paull, was an ideal fit for the role with financial services experience, time as a Big4 Director and leading climate solutions for an emissions data platform in Australia. James had the perfect blend of experience and leadership to take on the Head of Carbon role. Crucially he was also strongly aligned with Carbon Responabile's mission, values and behaviours, a critical part of the selection process.

A deep understanding of Carbon Responsible at a strategic and operational level as well as clarity of the technical and personal skills required to succeed in the role enabled us to provide a targeted yet diverse shortlist of candidates quickly so that an appointment could be made within 8 weeks of commencement of the search.

In addition to the planned hire, CR also hired a second candidate from the shortlist; Thomas Lüthi-Bhatti joined from BCG in the newly created role of Carbon Solutions Director. Tom is brilliantly aligned to CRs values and further strengthens the leadership team for the next stage of growth.
