Alison Smith Recommends IAC As The Audit Recruitment Agency

Article By Dave Pratt

I first met the IAC team over ten years ago when I was considering my next career move. It was refreshing to deal with individuals who had such an informed perspective on the internal audit market, who could offer in depth advice on potential moves and the significant trends that were emerging in this discipline.

We have stayed in touch ever since, and I was very happy to recommend them as the search firm to replace myself as the Head of Risk & Audit at Tate & Lyle when I moved. Since then, IAC have made a key hire for my senior management team at Kingfisher, but more importantly they remain a source that I can rely on for informed advice on the broader market.

The team I have dealt with has remained remarkably consistent over this time which means I do not have to waste time explaining the background and context on myself and the business. This historical knowledge of my expectations and the personal connection is invaluable in simplifying the recruitment process.

"They maintain an unrivalled network of contacts amongst the directors of the risk and audit community."

Alison trained as a chartered accountant with KPMG before joining the internal audit department at Allied Domecq in 1992, working within the global team across all sectors of the business; spirits and wine, brewing, food manufacturing and retail. In 1997 she joined Argos and became Head of Internal Audit in 2000. During her time at Argos she worked on a variety of projects, including the setup of the Risk Committee. In 2001 she joined Exel plc as Senior Audit Development Manager and was appointed Head of Audit in 2002. The internal audit department at Exel was going through a significant change at this time – two departments were being brought together. Alison was responsible for improving the perception and skills within the department, and the establishing and embedding of risk assessment within the Group. In 2007 Alison joined Tate and Lyle. Her job brief was to build and operate a new ‘state of the art’ internal audit function that is intent on raising standards in everything it does. After three years with Tate & Lyle, the opportunity to join Kingfisher came up. As Group Audit and Risk Management Director she is responsible for internal audit and risk assessment across the operations.
